The VoluntEar
RDA
The Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), Summerston

There are many ProjectScotland volunteers at The Riding for the Disabled school in Glasgow, all involved in a wide range of duties and activities. Their initial role, to help build their confidence as a Volunteer Groom, involves them mucking out, feeding, grooming and tacking-up the horses and taking responsibility of the general maintenance of the yard.

When the volunteer’s confidence and abilities have increased, they are given the chance to help in classes supporting the people with disabilities. Some of the volunteers also assist with teaching the children, which involves guiding them through the class while leading. RDA, through the commitment of their volunteers, enables people with disabilities to ride or carriage drive to benefit their health and wellbeing and to achieve their goals.

Jane Weeks (23), Glasgow Previously dropped out of university and wanted to do something fun and rewarding to get her life back on track. During her time as a volunteer for RDA she has gained confidence in working with children, animals and people with disabilities. She works well in this particular environment and it’s proven to her that she could enjoy a wide range of careers.

“I’ve gained great satisfaction from giving back to society and knowing that I am making a difference. ProjectScotland has made me a better person.”

Lisa Bradley (17), Glasgow
Before volunteering, Lisa worked in a hairdresser's but wanted to gain some experience working with animals. She feels like she has gained a lot of skills and knowledge in the welfare of animals and hopes to go on to study Animal Care at College. In the long-term, Lisa would love to work for the SSPCA to rescue sick and injured animals. Her line-manager commented that Lisa really helps to bring the group at RDA together as she is a great motivator for everyone!

“ProjectScotland has given me a push forward towards my ideal career.”

Damien Venditozzi (24), Glasgow
Prior to his placement, Damien was unemployed and unsure of what to do with his life. He feels that his time volunteering has made him more comfortable in social groups and boosted his confidence. He has recently decided to extend his placement and is continuing to enjoy his experience volunteering.

“Volunteering with ProjectScotland has given me an increased desire to make progress in my life and has increased my confidence in social situations.”
