ProjectScotland volunteers top of the crop.
They assembled in Edinburgh from all over this green and wet land of ours. They travelled down from the wild bits, across from the rainy bits and along from the funny bits to gaze upon the spectacle that is the Voscars 2008. Proving that heroes didn’t need bulging biceps, trembling triceps and a worrying use of tight, colourful clothing in order to be heroic. All they have to do is give up their time to help in their local communities. It is these heroes, these kings and queens amongst men that we honoured at The GRV.
The festivities began with a buffet and a boogie as ProjectScotland partner ‘Right2Dance’ from Paisley entertained us with their moves, talent and flexibility which made us all insanely jealous. At least I was, anyway. A tough act to follow but our Chief Executive, Kate Mavor, did a stand up job as she kicked off proceedings by telling everyone just how great ProjectScotland is and also just how much we help change the lives of young people all over Scotland.
Our esteemed host for the evening, Dougie Robertson, then got the show on the road as the moment we had all been waiting for began. Over the next hour, heroes and heroines from up and down the land collected their well earned prizes as the audience clapped enthusiastically, cheered wildly and sobbed uncontrollably, maybe that last part was just me. Okay, it was only me.
It wasn’t just volunteers that were honoured but mentors too. Oh, how those mentors mentored during 2008. How could we not honour them? They are a vital cog in the ProjectScotland machine and it was only right we recognised how much they do to help our volunteers during their placement. Mentors, you’re an inspiration to us all.
And as the last of our heroes began to file out of the venue, their arms burdened by their shiny ‘V’ shaped awards, the 2008 Voscars were officially drawn to a close. Until next year, folks!
