In July's Voluntear...

New recruit story - What's happening - Email of the month

New Recruit!

Name: Francesca Logan

Age: 22

Location: Edinburgh

Placement: Marketing & Events

Greetings all, I’m a new fellow ProjectScotland volunteer

I’m probably going to be meeting some of you guys over the following months and be helping to organise some cool events for you too, not to mention keeping you up to date through the VoluntEar, Facebook, Bebo and Myspace!

So here’s the script. I’m 22 years old, my name is Francesca which is an Italian name, however I am 100% Scottish, born and bred! I’ve had the pleasure of living in Edinburgh my whole life, and my favourite street in the city is Victoria Street, purely because of all the cute boutiques and typical old town Edinburgh architecture. That’s my mug shot there, and as you can see I was recently at Rockness modelling a rather fabulously customized ProjectScotland T-shirt. So as you might gather I’m into my music which varies from indie on a more calm day, to electro and techno on the more wild ones. I love art and design, and like to draw stuff now and again, which leads me to what I did before I started here.

For four years I studied at Napier University doing Product Design, which involved designing pretty much anything from a toothbrush to a high end piece of furniture. It also involved a lot of graphics work, prototyping and engineering training. However when I graduated last June I wasn’t really sure where to go with it. I loved my course and have always been a creative person but trying to break into the industry was never going to be easy and as the recession loomed unfortunately I couldn’t have graduated at a worse time.

So for the past year I have been continuing to do my design work in my spare time as a hobby, building my portfolio up, and until recently was working as a Sales Assistant in Boots. The job itself was ok and paid the bills, but was never going to give me any opportunities to develop upon the skills I had learned at university, or make me feel good about myself.

So as the New Year began I vowed to myself that I needed to change all that- typical New Year chat I guess. My sister had been in a similar situation to myself when she left university, and volunteered with ProjectScotland at the Scottish Executive for 6 months. This gave her lots of additional experience that you don’t necessarily get from the education system, and is vital when applying for jobs in such a competitive market.

Volunteering with a charity organisation seemed like a really great way to help give to someone else that needed it, and gain experience in return, which would hopefully help progress yourself.  So after looking at ProjectScotland’s placements I found myself down at the Head Q in Edinburgh discussing options available to me.

I’m looking forward to finding out more about what sort of experiences you’re having, and sharing the gossip with you! Keep in contact through our social networking sites- you know you’ve all got them. Hope your enjoying your ProjectScotland placements!

Ciow for now beautiful volunteers

What’s happening?

Since Jacko died there’s been a stream of crazy tributes to the legend. My favourite is the eternal moonwalk http://www.eternalmoonwalk.com/ May just add one myself, watch out for a ProjectScotland t-shirt making it past your screen!

The Clan’s gathered in Edinburgh to take part in Scotland’s Homecoming, seeing 125 clans coming together and roughly 7000 people take part in a parade down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Edinburgh was literally a sea of tartan!

T it the Park has been and gone again for another year, here’s a few random facts  about the festival that blows people's socks off year in & year out-

Its size equals the fifth largest town in Scotland over the course of the weekend…71% of cups were recycled in 2008 under the ‘Reduce, Redeem, Recycle’ initiative… The pint of Tennent’s Lager you enjoy on site is the freshest available, brewed just 36 hours before…a staggering 30,000 metres of fencing is used – and that doesn’t count the 8,500 metres of perimeter fence employed to keep T in the Parkers safe and sound...it sports the country's longest urinal- back in 2004, it stretched the length of two football pitches...the fans may have only arrived on Friday, but it took a team of hundreds 39 days to construct and dismantle the arena...WOWZA!

Have you ever seen bruser Ross Kemp look like this?!

Email of the Month

Hi ProjectScotland,

I'm Euan from Edinburgh and I got involved with ProjectScotland in April after I had left college. I was finding it difficult to find a job and was unsure after leaving college what I really wanted to do, I had heard about ProjectScotland in the past and decided to see if they could help me out. They were very helpful from the start and I quickly had an interview with the Edinburgh Cyrenians. The Cyrenians are a charity which collect surplus food from supermarkets and food manufacturers and then redistribute it to Edinburgh’s homeless hostels and other charities supporting the homeless. The interview went well and the project was very impressive; I was offered the six month placement which I began at the end of April.

There are around 80 people working at the project with 5 paid staff supported by myself along with one Italians and one German who are with the European Voluntary Service. The majority of the other volunteers are people who have at some point in their lives experienced homelessness. This was one aspect of the project which really impressed me, because volunteering there can provide them with experience which can help them build their confidence and skills and move on to full-time employment. The project also provides a feeling of community for people who otherwise might feel excluded through being out of work or homeless. The Cyrenians also provide cookery classes which teach people moving in to their own flat the skills they need to prepare healthy, filling meals for themselves on a budget. We also try to eat together every lunch time which is a great way to get to know each other better and enjoy some good food.

I’ve been amazed by the way such a diverse group of people can work as such a good team, and that people volunteering for free are prepared to work so hard. With such a large group there’s also a lot of laughter which makes the placement a lot of fun and makes the days pass very quickly.

ProjectScotland have also given me a mentor, who I’ve met twice already and who is coming to spend a day at the Cyrenians to understand what it is I’m doing, he’s already provided me with good advice and support.

I’m now in the sixth week of my placement which is scary because it’s moving so fast. It’s  proving to have been a great move because I think I would like to follow a career working at preventing homelessness and supporting those who unfortunately find themselves in that situation. It’s a brilliant experience and I’d recommend ProjectScotland to anyone who is a bit unsure about their next move.

Cheers for that Euan! Glad to hear everything is going so well.
