Let's recap

That is us well in to February now, but better late than never, I always say!

I hope you’ve all managed to get back to your pre-Christmas fighting weight after all the pies, cakes, irn-bru bars (do they still do them?) and turkey. I also hope you had a better Hogmanay than your editor who saw in the bells lying on the sofa with a sore head and throat. But enough of my girning, how’ve you all been?

As a volunteer, like you, our time on placement must come to an end sometime. For myself, the end is nigh. My 6 months are drawing to a close so why not recap on how different the world is 6 months on:

August: Chris Hoy won 3 gold medals in Beijing proving, what many of us had suspected, that he is, indeed, harder than Chuck Norris.

September: The term ‘credit crunch’ became a daily part of our lives as bankers up and down the country swapped shopping at Harvey Nichols for modest outlets such as Poundland, WH Smith and Morrisons.

October: The Little Master, Sachin Tendulkar, became the highest run scorer in the history of test cricket. Not a significant enough event for inclusion here? You’re probably right. However, it gives me an excuse to show this video.

November:
Some fella called
Barack O ‘Bama, you may have heard of him, created history in November by becoming the first Irishman to be elected as President of the United States. The picture above shows the scenes in Dublin when the result was announced.

December: Once again a significant birth was celebrated on December 25th 2008 – the 54th anniversary of Annie Lennox’s arrival on Earth. She may talk to angels and have funny dreams but there is no doubt this Aberdonian can sing.

January: Dancing On Ice returned to our screens for another year. You may scoff and declare this isn’t actually entertainment but I beg to differ. The defence presents Exhibit A.

Feeling heroic?

20th February 2009 hails the launch of our very first ‘Superhero Friday’!

Superhero Friday is day of the year when you are licensed to look out your mask, get into your figure hugging body armour, leave your secret lair and bring the thrill of Superherodom to your friends, family and colleagues.

Superhero Friday will see mass movements of people, preferably in fancy dress, having fun to raise money for our charity.

WHY ARE WE DOING IT?
Firstly, we want everyone to give a big shout out for ProjectScotland, to raise awareness of our charity and the great work that we do all over Scotland. Secondly, we need to raise urgent funds in order to help even more young people change their lives.

GET INVOLVED
If you would like to register to take part in Superhero Friday, get in touch!  Get on the blower to 0131 226 0700 and ask for the Superhero Advice Team, or drop us an email.

In honour of the very first Superhero Friday, we want you to help us answer the burning question: Who is ProjectScotland's favourite superhero?

Follow this link to vote.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=rw7vB2X0QT3uaeTBTMPryA_3d_3d

The person to come up with the best reason for idolising their chosen superhero will win a pair of Vue cinema tickets.

Email of the Month

Hi there,

I first heard of ProjectScotland through the local Volunteer Development Centre while I was looking into volunteering for the first time. As I wasn't initially doing it for enough hours I didn't pursue it. When I wanted to increase the amount of time I was volunteering at Young Musicians Hebrides I went back and looked at it and found that it would be an excellent way to support what I wanted to do.

Voluntary Action Lewis was then very helpful in setting up a placement for me at YMH. Now at the end of the six months I've been here funded by ProjectScotland I've been taken on as a member of staff, which otherwise would just not have been possible.

This placement didn't just give me the opportunity for a job, but has allowed me to grow much more confident as a person, which as a sufferer of depression has been absolutely invaluable. I've also gained new skills along the way of course and had the chance to use and go new places with those that I already had. Overall it's been a really positive experience and certainly a route I'd recommend for any other young person that might be interested.

Regards,

Luke Harty
