Placement: Glasgow Museums Resource Centre
Before placement: Volunteering for Glasgow Museums on part-time basis as part of Masters.

After completing his Masters, Jamie made the decision to volunteer full-time to get some work experience. The sort of work that he wanted to do needed practical experience that he didn’t get while studying. He had been volunteering part time at Glasgow Museums but realised that volunteering there full time could give the experience he desperately needed. His role now involves a large number of different activities, but the main focus throughout his placement has been undertaking research on local companies, social groups and individuals, on archaeological and historical sites and getting a feel for the history of Glasgow and the West of Scotland. Jamie has also been given the opportunity to help with the cataloguing or various archive collections.

Jamie’s volunteering has given him a real sense of accomplishment. He was able to see how the research he had done would be used by professionals and amateurs alike and how useful the work he was involved with would be to so many different people. At the moment Jamie is looking to extend his placement and start applying for jobs in the museum sector over the next few months. A variety of roles interest him but being able to work on different collections abroad would be something he would love to do in the future.

“ProjectScotland has given me the chance to volunteer on a long-term basis, giving me more experience with the result that I can realistically pursue a career in museums, which is a field I am very passionate about wanting to work in.
