Volunteer Video Diary – SusannePosted on April 23, 2020
Hi my name is Susanne. I’m from Germany, but at the moment I’m volunteering in Edinburgh with ProjectScotland. I work together with two other volunteers, Güler and Melissa and our project aims to make volunteering more inclusive for people with disabilities and mental health issues all across Scotland. We’re essentially creating resources for charities, that want to be more inclusive so that they can make their workplaces and their communication more accessible.
Due to the current crisis we obviously have to adapt our work as well as most other people really. We can thankfully still work from home. We use zoom or email to communicate and we can still take part in online workshops or meetings, which works quite well so far. I’m just so glad that we can stay here and continue volunteering. And I’m really grateful to ProjectScotland for how they’re supporting me. Our supervisor Caitlin is amazing honestly and they’ve also provided me with a really great mentor and they’ve linked us up with other volunteers that they’re supporting that are in similar situations right now, which has been really really helpful I think.
All these restrictions can obviously have quite a big effect on people’s mental health and I just feel like the staff at ProjectScotland is really aware of that and is talking about that really openly. I’m doing fine so far. We can still go out and exercise and we have a great project to invest our time in and I’m really glad that we do. But I know if I was struggling they’d be there and they’d support me, and I’m really grateful for that. In general the ESC is a really nice programme and I’d encourage everyone that has the chance to do it. It’s a great opportunity to try out new things and develop your skills if you want to and you can meet some amazing people along the way. It’s been really nice so far. I just generally hope that we all get through these challenging times okay. I hope you have a nice day. Take care! Bye!
