Volunteering as a way to get experience

Posted on June 5, 2018

Francisco moved to Edinburgh five years ago after completing a HNC in International Trading where he found marketing piqued his interest. He got in touch with ProjectScotland in order to get some marketing experience and ensure that it’s the career path he wanted to take.

Francisco advised: “It’s important to have experience, if you don’t it’s really hard to find a good job. Lots of people study now, so experience helps set you aside when it comes to looking for a job. It helps you learn about the field you’re interested in and can help you make the decision whether that’s the right field for you or not.”

Francisco volunteered with Euan’s Guide in a marketing role where he was able to get experience in a range of things that interested him from updating the website to using Google Analytics and AdWords. Not only did Francisco learn new skills he also got a better insight into how organisations run and teams are structured. All things that he feels will be valuable and help him when applying for jobs in the future.

What’s next for Francisco? Well, he hopes his experience volunteering will lead to a job or internship in marketing and is currently completing some online courses. When talking about his volunteer experience he advised: “I learned a lot and it was the perfect experience for me.”

We asked Francisco whether he would recommend others applying to volunteer, and he said: “Try and volunteer because ProjectScotland help you a lot, they help you to find the right placement for you which is really important. There is advice and support provided and you always feel that you have support of the ProjectScotland team.”

What more can we add to that?! Apply now and start your volunteer journey…
