Kate’s story

Building skills and confidence through volunteering

After Kate heard about ProjectScotland through college, she was keen to get involved to help build her skills and confidence through volunteering. She was also really interested in being matched with a ProjectScotland mentor to help her further develop her employability skills. Kate was matched with her mentor Lauren in August 2021, and they went on to meet weekly on Zoom.

Kate really enjoyed being able to talk to someone new, and said the sessions were well planned by Lauren. She liked having images and slides through presentations (which she gave a 10/10 for helpfulness!) to be able to understand things easier.

Lauren helped Kate identify some goals she would like to work towards and together they focused on updating Kate’s CV. They also practised writing cover letters, and Lauren gave Kate guidance on how to prepare for an interview by conducting practice mock interviews.

Kate would recommend having a mentor, and told us that mentoring has helped her, particularly with her confidence. Kate found practicing interview questions really useful, because she liked being able to learn new skills to help her get a job in the future.

“My ProjectScotland mentor, Lauren, helped me to gain confidence, practice interview questions and learn new skills to help get a job in the future.”  Kate, Mentee
